Chitragupta Puja 2021: puja date and timing, ritual and significance - All you need to know

During the Chitragupta Puja, stationery such as paper, pen, ink are worshiped.

On November 6, people will be celebrating Bhai Dooj and also Chitragupta Puja in some parts of India. Both festivals are observed two days after Diwali and hold great significance.

Lord Chitragupta is believed to be the god who keeps a detailed track of each person’s doings and doings. He has an account of who does what and then serves justice after the person’s death. Chitragupta Maharaj is the main deity of the Kayastha castes. He is Lord Brahma’s one of the many sons and because he was born of his body or kaya, the Lord declared that his children would be called Kayasthas. In Garud Purana, Chitragupta is considered to be the first one to use letters.

Chitragupta puja 2021 shubh muhurat | चित्रगुप्त जी की पूजा का शुभ मुहूर्त

Auspicious Muhurta for worship of Chitragupta ji: 6th November 2021, from 1:15 in the afternoon to 3:25 in the evening on Saturday, the auspicious time for worship remains. 


According to Dwitiya Tithi Start Panchang, Dwitiya Tithi will start on  5th November 2021, Friday at 11:15 pm and will end on 6th November 2021, Saturday at 7.44 pm. On this day, the time of Rahu
Kaal will be as follows- Rahu Kaal: From 9:26 am to 10:47 am .

Chitragupta puja Ritual

During the Chitragupta Puja, stationery such as paper, pen, ink are worshiped. For the rituals, honey, betel nut, mustard, ginger, hunting, sugar, sandalwood are used. In every Kayastha household, all the members of the family write down a mantra, their earnings and expenses on a white sheet. The paper is then presented before Lord Chitragupta.

Vermilion, turmeric and fresh flowers are also offered to the gentleman as part of the puja. A mixture of hunting and ginger is then distributed as prasad.

Here is the Chitragupta Mantra that devotees write on paper and present to the god:

Masibhajan sanyuktacharsi twam mahitale. Lekhi katni hasta chitragupta namostute.

Here is another mantra dedicated to the Lord:

Chitragupta namastubhyam vedaksaradatre

Hindu Gods Associated with this festival

The legend associated with the festival is that after Lord Brahma went into meditation for 11,000 years, after opening his eyes, he found a man holding a pen and inkpot in his hand. He had a sword on his waist. The Lord then said that because you were born of my Kaya, you will be the offspring of Kayasthas tribe and you were begotten in my mind (Chitra) and in secret (Gupt), so you will be called Chitragupta.

There are temples in Jharkhand, Bihar, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and Nepal dedicated to Lord Chitragupta.
